Book reviews: Rabbit, Run, by John Updike

John Updike's Rabbit Run did not lead me to pick up any of the following four novels in his Rabbit series regardless of it being hailed as a great modern novel.

His central character Harry Rabbit' Angstrom did not inspire any empathy with me but then this was Updike's purpose in creating such a boorish character. Supposedly representing the American male, I indeed felt sorry for the species.

Although considered shocking when it was published in 1960, it now seems that Rabbit's boredom with everything in his life was the precursor to our modern day reality shows.

In fact today he probably would be a prime candidate for the Dr Phil Show. Who would have told him in that Texan drawl, "For god sake man, step up to the plate."

For me, reading this book was like wading through treacle, I couldn't wait to get to the end.

This book is definitely one for male readers. If there's an opposite to chick lit', this is it.
