A day in the life of a web developer

Owning several websites and being the webmaster of many more, I can tell you a thing or two about being a web developer. A web developer has a very hectic job at times. Just when you get the website looking nicely, there is something else that needs to be changed or added.

A web developer needs to have knowledge in HTML, XHTML, C++, Visual Basic.NET, PHP, and many more different programming languages. Although many times a web developer has their favorite programming language, it is very important to have knowledge in as many programming languages as the web developer possibly can. The reason for this is that many people pay someone to build a website, or write a program for them, and then they decide they do not like the way it was done, and they call you. Now it is your job to decipher their code and modify it.

It is a web developers job to ensure that a program or website can be used by many different operating systems, and web browsers. They must write code to ensure that people with different screen resolutions are able to see the whole page, and not just a portion of the page.

In many cases a web developer needs to be able to work his way around a database, or many times build a database. There are many types of databases, and many different ways to work with them. Some databases are extremely easy to manipulate, while others take a bit more expertise.

A web developer needs to know vast amounts of information about web security measures to make sure that the information obtained by the website, or program has the least possible chance of being invaded. From my own personal experience, I like to use a Linux operating system for a secured server, and run Windows on my main computers.

In closing, a web developer has many different duties to perform, and must constantly study new technologies in order to perform their duties. You cannot be a web developer and decide that you do not want to continue to learn, or you will not have a job long.
