I was lucky enough to grow up in one of those places that isn't quite suburbia, and isn't quite the country. I grew up surrounded by farms, just close enough that you could smell the manure being spread in the spring. Because of where we lived, my father was able to buy fresh eggs from a local farmer, usually for half the price of grocery store prices. I still remember how disgusted I was when I moved out on my own and found out that not only did grocery stores charge "way too much" for mass produced eggs, but that they also had no flavor! How dare they!
Through the years I got used to those offensive eggs, but never fond. Worse, when Eggland's Best came to our local stores, they had even less flavor than the generic store brand eggs, and cost three times as much. But soon the organic and free range movements really began to take hold, and more options became available. Now our stores have entire sections devoted to organic and free range produce and meats. And they taste better. And I feel better knowing that those animals had better lives.
I now seek out organic and free range foods. I'm willing to pay more for my own health benefits, and the animals living conditions. I pay more attention to recycling because a healthy earth means healthy foods. I can't speak for everyone, but for me it all started with the eggs.
