Could changing product packaging save the Earth?

While there is no one thing that can be done to save the earth, there are things that we can do to make improvements and prevent more damage. One of those is changing the way we package our products.

By using recyclable, recycled, or biodegradable packaging we can drastically cut down on all forms of pollution, landfills won't be filled so quickly, and our health can improve due to fewer chemicals in the air, water, and land. It is important to note that biodegradable packaging is meant to be composted, not thrown away, otherwise it produces methane. Not good for the environment.

Happily, there have been great strides in the production of "plastic" from natural materials such as corn and potatoes. In fact, some of those products have been proven to be more durable than their traditional plastic counterparts. The key here is cost effectiveness. In much the same way that corn produced ethanol is too expensive for popular use, these corn and potato based plastics are not yet cost effective for mass production. With enough encouragement, more efforts may be made in these areas. After all, cost goes down in mass production. If these companies know that we stand by with our wallets in hand for environmentally friendly packaging and products, they'll be much more likely to produce them.
