Understanding skin, its roles and functions

Skin is the body's largest organ. Arguably, one of the most vital. It encases our bodies and keeps its delicate inner membranes and organ systems protected from various pathogens that the body may come into contact with.

Besides being a protective barrier, skin aids us in body temperature regulation by producing sweat to help keep us cool. Depending on the type of sweat glands in function, of course. Sweat is also a ways our bodies release urea and other toxins.

Skin is an important diagnostic tool when evaluating a person's condition. When someone presents to you and they are pale, cool and clammy you probably want to offer a cookie, they may be hypoglycemic. Ever wonder why your face gets red when your angry? It's because your blood pressure's rising. If you pinch the skin at the top of your hand and it remains "tented" that's a sign you're not drinking enough water.

Just imagine what everybody would look like without it! I would consider skin is immensely important, if for nothing more than cosmetic purposes.
