It seems that you can't turn on the television or read a newspaper these days without Sanjaya Malakar being the topic of conversation somewhere. The 17 year old pretty boy has, for better or worse, become one of the most popular contestants in American Idol history.
I am probably in the minority of adults who does not think Sanjaya is the worst thing to ever take the stage. No, he's not anywhere close to the best, and no, I do not think he should still be there. And, no, of course I'm not voting for him. I don't think Sanjaya has a that rivals Blake or Melinda, but I also do not think he deserves the scathing reviews that Simon and so many others thrust at him week after week.
What Sanjaya needs is some vocal training so that he can learn to have more inflection and power in his voice. His biggest problem vocally is that his voice is too weak. His biggest problem otherwise, is that "I think" he's sick of being pounded on every week and has stopped taking the competition seriously, hence the crazy hairdos and the bizarre performances.
If anyone watched this past week's episode, I would challenge them to say that Sanjaya did not do a great job for what he's able to offer. I finally think he took to heart what Paula and Randy have been saying and did what works best for him, and it showed in their opinions. Maybe it is those smooth ballads that will best show off his vocal range and talents. He doesn't have the power to belt out tunes, but he does have a nice voice.
This all being said, I will say that Howard Stern and websites such as "votefortheworst.com" are ridiculous. They make a joke and a mockery out of a show or shows that are made to give talented people an opportunity to show what they can do. I don't agree with this form of voting at all. But, I also really don't think that Sanjaya is still around only because people are "voting for the worst". He's cute and fun and sweet and probably has a huge fan base of pre-teen girls with brand new cell phones just dying to punch in his numbers each week.
Bottom line is no, I don't think that Sanjaya is ready for American Idol. I think he will probably outlast Phil and Chris, but once it comes down to him against Blake, Melinda, Lakeisha, and Jordan, he won't have a chance. Each week I will keep watching, hoping that he does well enough not to be degraded in front of millions of people, but I will also at the same time be hoping that he finally gets to go home, as I really believe he's as ready to go as the public is ready to say good-bye.
