Internet dating has gotten a bad reputation over the years. We read and hear about countless horror stories, but why do we never hear about the good ones? Quite simply it's because bad news sells, but how does this affect online dating tips?
As always, be careful. Even if someone sends you dozens of pictures, you'll never be sure that's who you're talking to until you meet in person. Also, be careful of those that send overly sexual emails and IM's before you've asked for them or met them. That's a sure sign that something is wrong with the person.
If a person is overly flirtatious, or blatantly sexual in a chat room, don't worry about it too much. Sometimes people play a role in a chat room, and it's nothing more than that. You'll find more crazies in Catholic and Skinhead chats.
Talk to the person in emails and instant messages, away from the chat room to see how they are away from other eyes. If you haven't met him in person yet, this will be the only gauge you have. Many people share things over the internet that they never would in person. If it comes to a point that you want to meet, remember these important rules.
* Never give out your home address, and agree to meet them there.
* Never go to their house.
* Meet in a public place such as a convention, or a crowded restaurant. You may even meet at someone else's house that you trust.
* Don't find a way to be alone with him the first time you meet, even if your inner desire burns a hole in your chest.
* Be honest, but have fun.
If he decided that he wants to see you again, and vice versa, then you can make other arrangements. Just keep in mind, that you still don't fully know him, so don't leave yourself in a position that could cause you harm. Once you're past that point, you're free to love or hate the person you met in real life.
One great thing about meeting someone on the internet first, it gives you a chance to talk to them in a completely different way than two strangers meeting in a bar would.
