The health dangers of reusing plastic bottles and bags

Reusing plastic bottles and plastic bags may seem like a great way to be an environmentally conscious citizen, but it involves some risk. The main danger associated with reusing plastic bottles and bags, is that plastic is a porous material. In other words, it has tiny nooks and crannies that we cannot see, but bacteria love to invade.

Bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia thrive in such environments. In particular, they like moisture. Refilling an old water bottle is exactly the type of pathway that could lead growth of these microorganisms. Plastic bags pose the same threat, especially if they are washed between uses.

This is not to say that reusing plastic bottles and bags should be avoided. There are plenty of creative ways to reuse them without putting one's health in danger. For example, use old plastic grocery bags to line a small trash can. When it fills with trash, you can tie the handles together and dispose of it.

Instead of refilling plastic bottles with a beverage, consider using it as a receptacle for your pocket change. Or, cut the top half of the bottle off and use it to plant herbs to use in the kitchen or flowers for your patio.
