Your words can affect other people's lives

Words are so powerful. They can be used as weapons or bring great joy - it just depends on how they are delivered. I am reminded of something I once read...If we could see the light that surrounds each and every one of us - then we would know how much our words affected one another. When you say something hurtful the light will dim but when we express words of kindness the light will brighten.

The following two experiences from two very different teachers show just how powerful words are and how they can affect your life.

My grade five teacher had a wonderful gift of making me feel special. She inspired all of her students and encouraged our creativity. Soft spoken and kind, she praised us continuously and rarely got upset. I felt as though I could accomplish anything and I am sure my light was glowing as bright as the sun that year!

Grade nine however, was a different story. We had to write a book report on a book we had recently read. I was an avid reader so that was no problem. I loved writing and happily did my homework and passed it in. When I got it back it was marked with an A- and the teacher's note said "Great work...IF YOU WROTE IT YOURSELF". I was devastated. Those words stuck with me for a long time and to this day they still hurt.

The old cliche "think before you speak" holds a lot of truth. You can choose to speak wisely and know that you've made someone's light shine and in turn they will pass that gift on to someone else. Or you can choose to use your words as weapons
that will leave scars that last a lifetime.

So be careful what you say... words, once spoken can never be taken back.
