As an affectionate compliment at dance clubs, and worn as proudly as a piercing. L.A. is the hottest melting pot in the nation, and therefore the most American in spirit. It's here that the highest concentration of envelope-pushers has fled to live, a motley migration forming an artful outcast origami. L.A. doesn't make unconventional people: unconventional people make L.A.
Maybe we should look at what is really means to be "crazy". Was Ben Franklin crazy when he decided to fly a kite in the rain? Maybe. Was Thomas Edison bonkers when he stayed up all night working on the electric light bulb? Possibly. Was Oliver Stone high when he directed the movie "The Doors"? Probably. But that's not the point.
The quality we Angelenos have, that is most overlooked and underappreciated of all is our sheer audacity, our courage, our ability to dare. To believe and say and do things that the rest of the world can hardly imagine, let alone fathom. We are a people living every day in pursuit of glamorous, yet unstable careers, on a terrain liable to burst open under us at any moment. The earth may swallow us whole, the world may call us "crazy", yet we will be remembered in history as nothing less than fabulous! Wow. I think I need to switch to decaf. Whatever.
