There are benefits and hazards in belonging to a guild:

The Pros -

1. It is often easier to find people your level to XP with
2. It is often easier to find people to help on quests
3. Raids are virtually always a guild effort to succeed.
4. Individuals are often excluded on raids
5. Having friends in game makes the game more fun and interesting
6. You can learn a great deal from your guild members on fun things to do in game and on quests and items and a whole lot more game knowledge than can be listed here

7. Cooperative efforts are sometimes required to succeed on some major quests (such as epic events)

The Cons -

1. You are painted with the same brush as the reputation of your fellow guild members
2. You will find that if you are in a serious raiding guild that raid guilds frequently fight amongst themselves and you may be viewed as "one of the enemy"
3. Members sometimes fight and drag you into it
4. Not every member of a guild is really a team player
5. You may not always receive "help" in proportion to the amount of "help" you give others in your guild
6. Some rules can be restrictive. Some guilds are more rule intensive than others

Ultimately it depends on what you want out of the game or want to do in the game. If you want to see the high end raid content in your game you will probably have to join a raid oriented guild at some point. If your goal is XP and Questing then you may get by without one for quite some time.
