How to decide if a guided tour is right for you

To take a tour or not is the question when traveling to a new location. Is it better to have a scheduled set of activities of when to eat, what to see and when to start your day or is it better to do it all on your own?

The major benefit of not taking a tour is that as a tourist you have the choice to choose which attractions you want to see and when you want to see them. Allowing the traveler to choose how "touristy" they want their vacation to be. In many cases this also allows the traveler to eat at the restaurant they choose which is perfect for the traveler that likes to stick to the areas frequented by locals.

One of the biggest complaints about taking tours is that you don't have control over your day because someone else sets the time schedule. This can make a traveler feel rushed and at times a little stressed out. This also does not leave them the freedom to opt out of certain attractions and to spend more time visiting others. Tours may not be such a good idea for those whose main goal during the vacation is to relax; however, it is a viable option for those who like to remain active and always moving.

On the other hand a tour is a great way to see everything in a given location. Sure the time period may be structured with a specific schedule but in areas that are new and different it could be the best way to see everything that there is to see in that given locale under a shortened time period. For example, if visiting an area that doesn't have public transportation readily available for tourists the tour can take care allow for the traveler to see everything with a convenient mode of transportation. For those who may not be used to the different driving styles or the language a tour can offer a sense of security. There is someone that is guiding you who speaks both languages and knows enough of the area to allow the tourist the feel relaxed enough to enjoy their vacation. Also a good tour guide can give an ample amount of useful interesting information about the area that could be missed by the common tourist.

When deciding on whether or not to take a tour what tour you take should be taken into consideration. Look closely at what they say they are going to do during the tour and also see what age group they may be targeting. This will determine the pace of the tour and who it is that you will socialize with while enjoying the various sites.

Tours can be very rewarding experiences. There is the chance to meet new people and get more information about the place you are visiting. Even if it isn't a day tour that is chosen other tours can be purchased upon arrival to the selected destination that will still add to the experience.
