How to reduce human water consumption

Of all the water available in the world, just one per cent of it is available for our own consumption.

Small wonder then that the onus is always placed on reducing our own consumption, and saving and re-using water where possible.

And yet taking positive steps towards doing this aren't too difficult. The average household can reduce their consumption quite easily by taking just a few simple steps.

You can buy devices to fit into your toilet cistern that will mean around 30% less water is required for each flush. That could save as much as three and a half litres for every visit. And when you consider that around a fifth of the water we use each day is to flush the loo, you can see what a big difference this makes.

Taking a shower means you'll use around a third of the water you'd need to fill your bathtub. Turning the tap off when you brush your teeth instead of leaving it running will save still more. And fix all those leaks and drips to stop the equivalent in water bills leaking out of your bank account.

And it pays to think about what you're doing every time you use water. Instead of turning the shower on and leaving it to get hot, collect that cold water in a bucket and use it to water your houseplants.

Even if you don't feel you can do very much to conserve water, you'll be surprised at the difference even a few small changes make - especially if you're on a water meter.

Sometimes, getting one of those installed can be the best way to make sure you do all you can to conserve your water. If you don't, you can bet you'll be paying for it.
