Have you ever talked to a female character in a game before, and found out later that the person sitting behind the computer controlling that character was a guy? Yeah, I was shocked too.

Yet, this kind of behaviour is slowly becoming more popular - that is, guys taking female characters. There are many reasons to this.

The first reason is purely for gaining an advantage in the game. Sometimes male and female characters have certain distinctions in games, apart from how they look. In some RPGs, which gender you are can affect your stats, and maybe what equipment you wear.

Another reason is also for gaining an advantage in the game. You know those 3D MMORPGs where those female elves' bodies just look so great? Yeah, we noticed too. Basically, some guys take female characters simply to 'lure' that poor guy sitting behind his computer just looking for a friend or a guild/clan buddy. These guys are willing to give items or gold as a 'gift' to the female characters. Call it online flirting if you like. All these female characters have to do is just get a hot character and wait for the trade requests.

Of course, there are also other reasons for getting a female character. Some guys just have this secret fantasy of being a girl, and the games give them that chance to try it out. Or maybe the guys are perverts, and like to control a female character for whatever reason.
