Deciding if a business degree is right for you

As Donald Trump said to a contestant in "The Apprentice," - "There's nothing wrong with education, right?"

Trump then proceeded to fire the self-made contestant, who had only been as far as high school, in favor of a contestant who held an MBA from a prestigious school. That candidate hadn't done much to distinguish himself up to that point in the show, and Trump's decision may have seemed unfair to many.

In fact, a business degree often operates to secure a job or promotion, that would otherwise be unavailable to an applicant, no matter what his job skills or experience happened to be. So,to paraphrase "the Donald" there's nothing wrong getting a business degree if you can. You'll find it opens many doors that would otherwise remain closed to you.

But you needn't necessarily put your career on hold while you wait to obtain your business degree. Their are many programs in which you can enroll and earn your business degree on a part-time basis.

You'll be able to avoid going into debt, be able to support your family, if you have one, and meet your financial obligations, while at the same time ensuring that a potential roadblock to your success - the lack of a business degree - has been removed.

You may discover that you are able, with your business degree in hand, to rise up through the ranks of your current employer's organization. For you now have the education to augment your workplace experience. Or you may find that you have other opportunities. Rest assured that the practical experience you gained from working while earning your business degree will stand you in good stead with other employers.

By obtaining your business degree through a program that lets you keep your current employment, you may find that you enjoy the best of both worlds. And you'll be able to agree with "the Donald" - or another employer like him - that, yes, there really is nothing wrong with having a business education.
