While many may only think the debate over English as the official language of the United States of America is aimed at the current immigration debacle that is plaguing our country and it's politicians. English is the international language of business, commerce, and travel.
There are may websites, one notably, www.eslcafe.com, which was started by Dave Sperling that currently has tens of thousands of jobs all over the world teaching English to all age groups. Even though Chinese nationals are taught English from kindergarten on up in public schools, private schools flourish in China as they offer native English speakers from Britain, USA, or Canada to teach the students the proper pronunciation and spelling of the English language.
Why is this? English has been and will always be the International language of business and commerce. Oil even though most of it comes from the middle east, at airports in Dubai and other middle eastern countries, the jet fuel is calculated in US dollars. The United States, regardless of it's unappealing nature to many of the countries around the world, is recognized as the leader of the free world. It is recognized as where the economy of the world originates and where business eventually relies on for it's market.
This requires an essential knowledge of the English language. Recently Newt Gingrich made some off color comments about "Spanish being the language of the ghetto", nothing could be further from the truth. Spanish is a beautiful language and the culture of revering family among Mexican households is amazing compared to most American families these days. So this is not an attack on anyone's heritage or language. This is a mere statement of fact. English is the language of progress. Not only within the USA, but around the world. Right now, in Beijing, taxi drivers are being prepared to speak English rapidly in preparation for the 2008 Olympics. Most government officials estimate that English speaking taxi drivers will make up to twenty times the money in fares as those who do not speak English. If you have ever been out of the country to a non-traditional English speaking country like China, France, Costa Rica, etc, then you know that there is usually always one person at the front desk of a hotel that speaks English. Upon speaking with them, you'll find out they usually make twice what the other employees make and are usually offered management jobs much faster as they have the ability to manage and work with employees and
