So your GPS device was dropped into the stew last night and has completely shorted out. Now what do you do? You get out your compass and map of the area. Then you find your way home easily. But how do you use the compass and map?
First, determine where you are on the map by identifying major landmarks. Next, you need to be sure of what directions are where. Use the compass to identify magnetic north. Then spin the compass quickly. Check to make sure magnetic north did not move. What this does is makes sure your compass is reading correctly. Now, looking at the map, find what direction you need to go. Keep the compass out or check it regularly as you walk to be sure you are on a good heading. As you hike out, it can be useful to record your movement on the map.
One tip that some people like to do is to hold the map under the compass and let the compass find magnetic north. Then orient the map so that its north matches the compass's. When you see what direction you must head in, start walking!
