I haven't really watched American idol since the first one. The winners after Kelly Clarkson were not as good. It seems to be more of a populatarity contest then singing.
Even though I don't watch it, I do see highlights on EXTRA and other TV shows. A while back I heard that satellite radio personality Howard Stern was behind sanjaya malakar. Not because his thinks he sings good but to help the least talented win. It has been a while since I have listened to stern but from what I remember this doesn't shock me.

Stern has been working with a Web site, votefortheworst.com and using his radio platform to encourage his listening audience to follow the site, which advocates that "Idol" viewers vote for the worst performer on the show. On most blogs about American idol sanjaya is not a favorite. Nevertheless, he remains in the competition anyways. Some think judge Simon Cowell will quit if Malakar wins.

You know Stern is loving every bit of it.
