COLOR
Use light, cool colors and stick to the same color family when choosing colors for your small room. This will make the room feel more open.
Use plain, solid furniture fabric rather than stripes or floral prints. Also, by matching the wall paint with the fabric will make the furniture disappear in the room and make it appear bigger.
Choosing sheer window coverings will allow more light to filter into the room as well as give a light, airy feeling.
FURNITURE
Choosing a few big pieces of furniture is better than having several small pieces of furniture. A lot of small furniture or small knick-knacks will make a room look cluttered and smaller.
Furniture placement is also an important factor to consider. Make sure there is enough room to comfortably walk through the room - squeezing through tight spaces will make the room seem smaller.
Mirrors are also a great accessory. Mirrors reflect light and will make the room feel bigger.
Paintings, pictures, and light fixtures can be used most effectively if they are tall and long; this will draw eyes up, also making the room appear bigger.
