The organic food movement has not really caught on like the proponents hoped it would. There are several reasons for this, the number one being cost. Organic food cost a lot more to produce, and this shows up at the cash register. Organic fare costs 10 to 40% more than commercial food.
Most Americans aren't convinced of the health benefits either, what makes organic better for us? You can't convince someone that a sub-standard looking apple is better for them than the tasty looking commercial fruit. If organic food is so much better for you, then why does it look so pathetic? Contrary to popular belief, organic farmers DO use PESTICIDES, so there goes that benefit.
The organic movement has sold out to big business, and it is just a matter of time before we start seeing changes in restrictions. The lobbyist will work to lessen the choke-hold growing requirements in place on organic farming now.
Wal-Mart is making plans to add more organic foods to it's inventory, and keep the price to within 10% of regular commercial food. This sounds good until you think about the possibility that this will increase the demand, and thus decrease the quality. And Wal-Mart is famous for going abroad to keep it's shelves stocked, imports of organic food will soar, and controls and regulations will fly out the window.
I would rather have home-grown commercial food than imported organic, the loss of control over quality scares me. Thinking that my food may be coming from who knows where in China is unsettling, at least. So, it looks like the organic boom may turn out to be a bust, especially with big business tinkering around with it.
