CBS fires Don Imus

Today, I got what I wanted. But more importantly, the Rutgers' women's basketball team, as well as other female athletes around the country, got what they deserved, RESPECT. By firing Don Imus, CBS took a giant step in defending the integrity of women athletes and protecting them from further verbal persecution. One can only hope that such punishment becomes the precedent for such incidents and that this is not just a one-time or fluke judgement call.

The firing today came after MSNBC decided yesterday to drop the simulcast of Imus' show. Imus is in the Broadcaster Hall of Fame and was once named one of the 25 most influential people in America by Time magazine.

This whole series of events should aid in holding celebrities in the sports world accountable for their actions. We give athletes, commentators, and broadcasters too much freedom with their words and my personal hope, along with others I'm sure, that this will cause these individuals to choose their words wisely. Just like any of us "common folk" know that saying the wrong thing in your work environment can cost you your job and ultimately your salary, this upper class should be reminded that the same holds true for them, that they are not above the law, not above being discriminatory.
