* As you will see, this article isn't about "the best coach," it is more about the most imporant coaching decision in this past year. I hope you enjoy it.*
People haven't quite figured it out yet, but with last week's loss to the University of North Carolina, the magical season for the Trojans of Southern California is actually just getting started. Word, nay Lore has spread about what they are embarking on as we speak the O.J. chronicles.
I'll spare you the puns about his condiment-like last name, and his shared first name with a former superstar-turned-lunatic, because 1. I speak in metaphors. And 2. No play on words could do justice, what USC is about to go through.
I wonder if Tim Floyd has any idea what he's done. This man is held accountable for the demise of the post-Jordan Bulls franchise, and has bathed in annonymity since. He's managed to keep his name, and coaching strategies out of the media's jaws for the past few years by staying small, and working quitely. Widely considered one of the worst coaches of his time, crushed by the shadow MJ cast over Chicago, Tim Floyd just gave away his basketball team to the biggest name in high school basketball. O.J. Mayo is coming to USC, and the countdown starts now.
The New York Times broke the story of Mayo's "recruitment," detailing how the phenom ended up at USC. Among the buffet of absudities was that fact that a third party showed up in Floyd's office, uninvited and unnanounced to speak on O.J.'s behalf, Tim Floyd has never had O.J.'s phone number, but instead received a call every six weeks to "check in," and the news that apparently O.J. himself was recruiting for USC next season. Now while I know, have seen and heard what takes place during the "courtship" of a Blue Chip prospect, that it is a notriously shady endeavor, the tale of USC and Mayo has been almost too much to bear. It has been beyond humorous, into hilarious for most of the past two weeks.
However it dawned on me, after about a week of trying to re-read the stories without laughing, that this is more troubling than anything else. Not because Mayo is looking to "market himself for the NBA," but because somebody was willing to so blatantly let their university be the window space. Now of course any team would be happy to have O.J. Mayo, just as any team would have been happy to have Greg Oden or LeBron (had he been forced into college). I just can't help but feel a line has been crossed. And yeah, sure we'll hear
