Xanax, or Alprazolam, is a sedative-hypnotic drug in the benzodiazepine class that is commonly used for controlling the symptoms of Anxiety Disorders. Due to its high potential for abuse, it should be used carefully only under the direction of a qualified physician, and several measures should be taken in order to avoid abuse and dependence.
Xanax should not be dispensed to individuals who have a history of drug abuse or addiction. It should also only be taken for short periods of time. Long term use usually leads to dependence even if it is taken correctly.
This medication should also never be used in conjunction with Alcohol, Methadone, or Suboxone. Use with these drugs creates a synergistic effect, or the effect of the two drugs is greater than the effect of the sum of the two individual drugs. For example, 1 part Alcohol plus 1 part Xanax equals 5, instead of one plus one equals two.
Xanax should be stored in a secure location, out of the reach of children, and never used longer than or other than directed. Due to the tissue dependence created by Xanax when taken for a period longer than two weeks, it is highly recommended that the patient be tapered off slowly as to avoid withdrawal which can lead to seizures, hallucinations, and death.
