Well currently there are tons of different ways for this electronic production, software programs today achieve what industry standard hardware in studio`s but you can just sit infront of your pc at home, fruityloops (image-line) being one of these programs retailing at around 99 depending on the version, this would be good for trance/dance producers inside the prog,has different features piano roll,fx,mixer,vst support,vocal editing.

piano roll is like a virtual piano if you don`t own a midi keyboard you can just create your melodies using this with the mouse.

vst support is widely used cubase (steinberg) is the main reason that vst was made, there are many instruments that mimic their hardware counterparts if you can`t afford to buy the hardware version then you can plugin the software and use that way.

if you didnt wanna go that route then a program called Reason which is made by propellerheads is like a whole studio inside one package it does everything you need it to and is compact so you get things done alot faster, with more sounds which can be downloaded in the form of refills has everything a studio would do and alot more flip the rack around and you can wire up the different units to your liking.
