Feel the burn: Yu-Gi-Oh's direct damage decks

We all know that the main focus while playing a game of Yu-Gi-Oh is to deplete your opponent's life points down to 0. Normally you do this by attacking with your creatures, using their effects and power to defeat an opponent's monster and clear their field in order to directly attack them. This is the most used way of defeating an opponent; however there are those few decks that don't focus on the power of their monsters, but rather the direct damage effects of their Spell and Trap cards. These decks are called and often referred to as Burn decks.

Burn decks use spell and trap cards to inflict direct damage to an opponent's life points. Such cards like Tremendous Fire and Ookazi have the effect of dealing X amount of damage to an opponents life points right off the bat, but the idea and strategy of a burn deck goes much deeper. You have to be able to fend off opponents attacks, while dealing damage yourself, and you have to find some way to stop an opponent from swarming the field.

A burn deck can not just be built with nothing but direct damage cards, but rather needs tech cards to stop an opponent. One strategy involved with these kinds of decks is to stop your opponent from attacking. Using cards like Gravity Bind will keep level 4 or higher monsters from attacking, also Level Limit Area B will turn level 4 or higher monsters to defense position not allowing them to attack. By playing with either one of these strategies you can use cards to damage an opponent and still remain safe.

There are a lot of cards that have effects that will directly damage an opponent, and it's up to you to find which one's will fit well in your deck. Not every burn card is a good card. Sparks only inflicts 200 points of damage, and Tremendous Fire only deals 1000, but does 500 to the user. Keeping cause and effect in mind you need to select the 40 cards that will best support one another, and carry your deck to a decisive victory.

Some of the better cards that deal direct damage to an opponent are listed below

Wave Motion Cannon This card gains 1 counter on it on your turn. When you discard this card from the field in order to use its effect then your opponent loses 1000 life points x the number of counters on the card. This means that as long as you can prevent your opponent from using such cards like Mystic Space Typhoon, and Heavy Storm you can possibly pull off a one turn kill. The only problem with this card is that it builds up damage slowly and can run the risk of being discarded.
