The Don Imus Show was never a National Treasure. It was just a reflection of the present state of the American nation......
You must remember THREE issues in the Imus 'foul mouth' incident (which did get him Fired):
1. We live in a country where the 1st Amendment protects Freedom of Speech and
whether you agree or disagree with Imus is not the question. He does have the right to his opinion and to voice his opinion, no matter how stupid or full of negative bigotry it is.
2. Should Broadcast Media be more responsible for the images and words displayed by their public personalities, such as IMUS and other "shock jocks". I say, Yes, they should because we all realize how powerful the media is in influencing public opinion. Take responsibility for your programing Media Moguls or the populace may turn you off and stop buying the products you sell!
3. Remember, America is the Land of Opportunity and Choice! You can always turn the channel or just shut the media box OFF. Perhaps this is long overdue, our shutting the media off and returning to conversation between people as a source for information and opinions. Why do we listen to raging radio personalities and wacky TV commentators, whose broadcasts are basically meant to insight the public and sensationalize ordinary news incidents making them into bigger than life stories? Why? Why America? Why?
Controversy and intelligent discussion help us expand our minds and our hearts, but loud arrogant ramblings from radio and TV personalities only serves to incite the ignorant and hurt the innocent. Imus, was fired, but he rose again, and is back on the air. This time around perhaps he will choose his words more carefully. I believe, I am not alone in wishing talk-radio would clean up its act. For years I have listened to the air-jocks, as I have driven across the American highways. They have been my companion on long trips and many times the source which kept me awake on 14 and 16 hour journeys. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer of them out there in radio-land that I enjoy listening to. Like Imus, many have become screamers, ranters and whiners. They insult their listeners and the people who are the topic of their ranting escapades, on live air-time. Again, I will ask the question. Why?
as Murrow would say,"Good Night America and Good Luck" .... Imus
