Chinese New Year is one of the most celebrated occasion.
Simple rules for new year includes,
1. No sweeping of anything, as the chinese believes that it might sweep away good luck or fortunes.
2. If you are visiting a traditional chinese family, like in some parts of China, do not wear black, preferably lighter or red coloured clothes. As black symbolizes bad luck.
3. Remember to have to red packets(with money in it of course) for younger generations or children.

Some background knowledge.
The chinese lit firecrackers(where it is not banned) in a tradition.
This is based on a myth that it will chase away a new year monster, known as Nian.

Greet them Happy Chinese New Year/ Xin Nian Kuai Le.
Here are some other phrases, might be helpful.
Nian Nian You Yu (Means be prosperous)
Kuai Gao Zhang Da (Meant for kids, which means grow up faster)
Gong Xi Fa Cai (Wishing them Prosperity)
Shen Ti Jian Kang (Wishing them good health)
Wan Shi Ru Yi (Wishing them prosperity)
You'll notice there is alot phrases for prosperity, as it is especially important in the New Year.
