You're shy, yet you want to meet people. Shy people, by nature, stay away from places where they feel insecure. Isolation is not a good option for the shy person because it compounds the problem of feelings of hopelessness.
Maybe you are looking for Mr. Right but you are afraid of taking a chance. You are not alone. Love is a risk in all situations but you must take the initiative or resign yourself to feeling left out.
One good thing that you can do is to take the focus off of yourself and start meeting people in a safe environment. Take stock of your interests and find a place to volunteer that meets your interest. If, for example, you have love history and art, you start by volunteering in an art gallery or a museum. Interacting in a safe environment allows you to expand your skills at making conversation. As you progress, you find that you can make both meaningful and small talk. You feel more at ease and your confidence is boosted.
You might meet someone special there who shares your interests, but even if you don't, you've taken the first step to acquiring the skills to interact with people of all ages and cultures.
Build friendships with your own gender. They can offer advice and tips on dating and give you emotional support when you meed it.
If someone asks you for a date and you are not attracted or interested in him, as long as he is a safe person, take a risk and go out with him. Dating without investing all your emotion is a good way to break into the dating scene. At worst, you have spent an evening out on a date. At best, you could find out that there is more to the person than you originally thought.
As you hone your skills of interaction with others, you are ready to branch out to meet other people and other opportunities that embrace your newly acquired skills.
