There are numerous ways to save money on gas. Some are as easy as changing your style of driving, which is actually easier said than done. Others are through the works of after-market parts.
Lets start with the freebies. These are things that everyone could do to improve some of the mileage on their own vehicles, no matter what kind it is.
- ease off the gas -
*instead of acting like we're all teenagers again and acting like every stop light and stop sign we come across is a good excuse to get practice for the drag strip. How about easing on the when starting from a stop. Heavy feet on the start uses the most gas in our vehicle.
*keep your speed down. For all the highway travelers out there. Keeping your speed at or below 60 mph while on the highway has shown to greatly increase a cars fuel economy.
*coast down those hills. I know this is probably starting to sound a little anal but coasting down a nice steep hill instead of riding the throttle will also help save you in the fuel department.
- don't let your car idle for long amounts of time -
*if you are really stuck in traffic and not going anywhere for a while, or if you're stuck a railroad crossings, shut your car off. Why let wasted fuel get burnt up if you aren't going anywhere.
*don't warm up your car for long periods of time. 5 minutes of warming up the car is all you should need on those cold start days. Don't be lazy and start your car 20 minutes before you leave to let it thaw and defrost the windows for you.
after-market products.
- exhaust -
*a free flowing exhaust will help you get some fuel economy, as long as you don't hot rod it to hear that new sweet sound.
- air filters -
*keeping a clean air filter is essential to good fuel economy. If you afford one an after-market filter that is reusable and/or an after-market air intake kit will help boost your fuel usage. Once again, as long as you can stay out of the throttle.
- computer tuning -
*for most new cars tuning the computer is a piece of cake if you purchase a programmer. There are many companies that make these and they are very easy to use. Most have a setting for better fuel economy, and if you want to burn more fuel on a Friday night they can also tune your engine to run with more power and torque.
