How to help your child welcome a new sibling

by Jo.H

Welcoming a new baby into your family is a joyous occasion but t can be very difficult for a young sibling. The best way to avoid any jealousy issues is to get the older sibling involved in the pregnancy even before the baby arrives.

If you are redecorating a nursery, ask your child to choose the color scheme and explain to them that the baby needs their help because it won't be able to talk yet. Children love to feel grown up and included so the more you can make them feel part of the new baby's life the better.
Let them know that they are about to become a big brother or sister and tell them what an important job that is.

Once the baby arrives ask your other child to help you feed the baby. It is also important to spend time alone with the older sibling. I know this might be difficult but even half an hour of special one to one time with the older child will be enough to show hem that you still love them just as much as before.

Depending on the age of your older sibling you could even buy them a small gift from the baby and tell them that the baby wants to say hello to his big brother/sister.
