Lewis Carroll is the pseudonym of the English writer and mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Born Jan. 27, 1832, Caroll is most often know for ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (1865) and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (1872). These are popular children's books expressing Carroll's talent for satire . Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names into the Latin "Carolus Lodovicus" and then anglicizing it into "Lewis Carroll."
Though best known for his ALICE stories, Carroll was also known as a recognized photographer. None to surprising, his favorite subjects to photograph were people, especially children. One of his first photographic subjects was Alice Liddell, who was one of three daughters to Henry George Liddell, ( dean of Christ Church). She is thought to be the model for the fictional ALICE in Carroll's stories.
Other works by Carroll in the genres of comic and children's works also include The Hunting of the Snark (1876), various collections of humorous poetry, and the two parts of Sylvie and Bruno (1889, 1893), unsuccessful attempts to re-create the Alice fantasies.
While his children's stories will always remain the most popular, Carroll also wrote essays, political pamphlets, and mathematical textbooks.
Carroll's curious mixture of wit, humor, satire and sheer nonsense make him a continued classic' in children's stories even today. Though not always correctly credited for them, Carroll is the source of such sayings as ,"Curiouser and curiouser!", and "Everything's got a moral, if only you can find it".
Carroll died Jan. 14, 1898 at the age of 57. He is buried with many of his siblings at The Mount cemetery in Guildford, Surrey, England.
His epitaph reads:
Where I am there shall also my servant be.
