Have you ever heard of the hit TV show on ABC called Lost? Well, the story goes a little something like this: a plane crashes on an island after leaving Australia and no one has found the survivors yet-after 80 days. I am an avid fan of the show, and come to think of it, I don't think one single person knew where any of those people were or when exactly they were going home. So, keeping in touch with family when traveling is probably a good idea, because of that little thing called safety, especially overseas.
However, I'm the type of gal who travels to get AWAY from the family. So in order for me to communicate with family while traveling, there would have to be some pretty fun ways to do it. Here are some ways to keep in touch with family that would even make me want to:
-Do you own a laptop? Add a digital video camera to the mix to capture the sights and sounds that interest you, and upload them to your laptop or an Internet cafe at your destination or airport.
-Call home from your traveling. If traveling overseas, calling cards may or may not be cheaper to buy beforehand. Check on-line for rates at your destination. When you call, make sure not to leave out the stories about the crazy cab driver.
-Find some unique postcards and send them off. Get risky and write something you know would embarrass the recipient if postal workers were to read it.
-E-mail. I think everyone reading this article finds some joy in going on-line. If you don't own a laptop to take along, or just can't get a wireless signal, track down an Internet cafe. The rates aren't too bad yet-most are around five dollars for an hour. Many U.S. cities have welcome centers with free Internet.
Whether you would go to the mild extremes I've listed or not, the basics of each point are good ways to keep in touch with family while traveling.
