There are many things to consider if you are debating about going to college to get a degree in computers or information technology. I have a degree in computer programming and also a degree in Information Tachnology, and there are several things that I did not consider before deciding to go forward with obtaining my computer degrees.
First of all, consider your location. Are you willing to relocate to another city, or even another state? Do you live in a small town or a big city? Many people want to live and work where they were raised, or at least near their hometown, so if you are one of these people, you need to start looking for companies in your area that would employ someone with a computer degree.
Though computers are every where in this day and age, that does not mean that there are an overload of computer related careers in your area. Many businesses do not even have an Information Technology Department, they simply contract an Information Technology company to do all their work for them whenever they may need it.
Another situation may be that many small town businesses hire people for computer jobs and they stay for years due to the fact that like you, they do not want to move away either. Even the fact that most computer technicians make less money working in small towns than they could in a bigger city, does not effect their decision to stay with the small town company.
One major benefit of having computer or Information Technology degrees is that there are many opportunities for you to earn money on line. There are too many different things to name that a person who is educate din computers can do to make money on line, but I will tell you one place you can go is RentACoder.com to find all sorts of different jobs that can bid on.
Though I do not regret getting my college degrees, I do wish that I would have checked into things a little better before I started college, so that I would have known what to expect after I graduated.
