It's always possible to call the family while traveling. If you have a laptop and access to a wireless hot spot, you can stay in touch by email. If calling is too expensive and a laptop is not available, there is still the good old-fashioned mail. Because I tend to be lazy when it comes to filling out addresses and stuff like that, I would be sure to take along address labels for my relatives and for my return address. Also buy your stamps in advance and take them with you.
Then you just spend a little time finding nice post cards at your various locations, stick on the stamp and the two mail addresses, write a few words, and send it off. If you feel the need for a longer communication, you can usually find envelopes and stationery in most motels and hotels. You would just need your addresses and first class stamps. It should be noted that some hotels and motels have computers available for guests in the lobby or a business area.
I find that I like receiving post cards and don't feel the need for a lot of information. When the family member gets home they can tell us all about the trip and share their pictures and souvenirs. A post card usually satisfies my need for communication.
