So, your thinking about nursing as a career? The whole affect of nursing revolves around one thing and one thing only. Helping the sick, the infirmed, the less fortunate. It does not mean wearing cute scrubs, getting a great paycheck, or having something career wise to "fall back on". It does mean you will need compassion. And lots of it. You will need intuition, savvy observation, a keen sense of hunch. You will need patience and tolerance and a strong stomach. You will not be willy nilly about body fluids and you certainly won't be lazy. You will face death many times over, and you will cry. You won't "harden" to death and illness as someone may have suggested to you. You will be an expert in public relations when you interact with families who do not understand the things you do to their loved ones. You will be a doctors eyes, his ears, and his or her best advocate for your particular client or patient. You will be a writer, with grand attention to detail, after all, your license will depend on this. You will be tired, sick and injured from pushing and pulling and exposing yourself to disease. You will interact with other nurses who are not always nice to you. Sometimes, they are not even nice to your patients. But, you will plod on.If you think you can do all this, and maintain your integrity and compassion? Then you do want to be a nurse. And you will find, that your life will be fullfilled, worthwhile, giving and loving, and no one person will ever take that from you on your own deathbed. So, you want to be a nurse?
