File naming is very important. Consistent conventions when available can help revive memory.
There are many options.
Including the date in a file name, especially for versions of a webpage to be archived, can be very valuable: file070410.htm includes year, month and day in yymmdd format.
Using descriptive words in development file names can assist others in following work: javascriptGeniousInnovation070 410.htm for example suggests maybe bloated ego more than nature of file. Maybe better: guitarOnHoverEffect070411.htm reminds/suggests that a mouse point at a chord representation link might bring to screen for students a picture of guitar frets.
Some prefer to name folders specifically for such things and either append date range to folder name OR simply leave the date function on a computer to mark the date, risking little more than postings elsewhere and resulting confusion.
One of the biggest file naming convention controversies is whether to use ".htm" or ".html" for a file name, perhaps of those "index.htm" and "index.html".
Both work okay for the most part.
Sticking with just ONE convention system wide or website wide or workstation wide can be a problem.
Which one wins if the two are pitted against each other in the same folder?
You do the research. Get back to 'us' with your results. When it's decided what works which way, someone just makes a donation to someone and it's en route reversed...just for fun, I'll bet.
Good luck in your file naming convention setting attempts and/or conforming with those of your coworkers.
At least you'll see why they strung you up later...or can at least wonder why even following their bizarre conventions you haven't at least earned the right to on the planet co-exist: "He kept naming files like I did...I was sure, officer, that he was going to steal my work. I didn't ask for an apprentice. They weren't paying me enough to deal with the copying...that's all. I turned myself in, right? Right?"
