I prefer cats because they're more independent. If you have physical limitations, they can take care of themselves except to feed themselves if they're housecats. If you give them a catnip mouse toy, they can entertain themselves often and for a long time. Dogs like you to keep throwing their toy and they fetch it and return it. So they need more interaction and are more dependent.
People who don't have children often prefer dogs if they would like that type of relationship. Sometimes people have dogs and then their own children are born and they no longer have the time to spend with the pet that they used to, and the dog is lonely. If you include the dog in your relationships, it can enrich the family. I had cats before my children were born, and they cuddled up near the children after they were born. Contrary to some tales I had been told, the cats never went on top of the babies to go after their milk or anything.
I have enjoyed a few dogs and several cats in my family, but I would never trust any animal one percent of the time around children. They have sometimes nipped me and I believe they would nip a child who is more likely to play roughly with a pet.
There's nothing like a pet to lie down next to you when you're ill though when everyone else is busy with their own lives. I went through an awful time of injuries after a car accident, and the family cat and dog spent a lot of time on the bed next to me. I'll always remember that. They knew I used to walk and feed them, and they were very loyal to me. They returned my love.
