5 steps to become an actor

Acting can be one of the most fulfilling and rewarding jobs in the world but it can also be the most disappointing. It looks easy but rest-assured it can be tough and you need to have as much information at your disposal before you start. Approximately 92% of actors are out of work, 5% are employed regularly and 3% are famous, so only do this job if you love it.

1 - your first step is learning. Drama schools are really the only true way of doing this. As in any chosen career you should be educated in your chosen field and it also leads to countless opportunities, such as, audition speeches, agents, and meeting industry people but more importantly it will provide you with the tools you need to hone your skill.
There are several leading drama schools - RADA, Guildhall, Central School of Speech and Drama, LAMDA, Drama Centre, Bristol Old Vic etc... You can look at any of these sites on-line and find out about the styles of teaching. There can often be a high cast financially but ever where is different so have a look.

2 - It sounds simple but going to the theater is very important. It is easy to sit at home and judge from the comfort of your sofa, but theater will be your main source of income... Yes! If you were thinking that television or film is where its at I'm sorry to disappoint you. Apart from that it is important that you experience live theater and watch your fellow actors up close.

3 - Agents are probably the most important tool you can have in this industry. most people get an agent in the final year at drama school, which is why its so important. At the end of the third year you will do an agents showcase and it does exactly what it says on the tin. Agents are the link between you and the casting directors, as well as supporting and guiding you.

4 - Having a job that you do while you're not acting is vital as i can grantee you that you will have spells out of work... its completely normal. The job needs to be flexible in case of auditions and although it is mainly for financial reasons it also keeps you sane and active.

5 - Here are two steps in one. Firstly, writing letters to casting agents is hugely important. There are thousands of actors and although they have incredible memories, reminding them of who you are or that your still around will possibly get you a job that they wouldn't have necessarily put you up for. The second thing is to do a course. The actors center is a great way to meet fellow actors and directors. The reason i have put these two things together is because acting is about networking, meeting people and getting yourself out there.
