1964 and 1/2 ford released the first pony car, it was more or less a concept but it went in to full production in 1965 with hardtops, convertible,and fastbacks the most popular of all was the fast back with the fold down rear seats and the small block v8 289 cid(cubic inch displacement) engine. 1966 saw little change. But the 1967 mustang hit the ground running with a choice of a big block 390 cid, the most common big block and for this article i am only covering the run of the mill
full scale production and chose not to include all of the rare and limited editions.
and with that in mind 1968 saw little change, but ford new it had struck gold with the lightweight body and massive cubic inches, and in 1969 they retooled and changed the look again to probably the prettiest of all.And if you wanted you could go down to your dealership and drive out with a 1969 Mach one 428(cid)cobra jet, which is probably the most sought after of the production cars today(excluding shelbys)1970 saw little change.and then in 1971-1973 saw the last of the big ponys
as gas prices started to rise people need more fuel efficient transportation.
and the horse was a think of the past, and as far as most pony lovers are concerned
Ford killed the mustang in 1974 with the mustang 2.
