Of course Don Imus' comments were highly offensive and outright staggering, but that is his job. He is a "shock jock" and his ratings depend on how far and low he is willing to go. I am sure this is not the first thing he has aired that would offend either one person or a whole group. Occupations such as his are possible because there is a certain segment of society that thrives on distasteful and outrages behavior. The public outcry is somewhat satisfying in that it illustrates there still is a line not to be crossed in the name of decency. The fact that he debased a hard working group of respectable women gives little credence to his rantings. He is easy to ignore and has nothing of value to add. For Don Imus it is all about ratings and has little to do with integrity and respectability.
However, let us redirect our thoughts to Rev. Al Sharpton. Here is a man who has chosen a profession that is all about honesty, family values, and the truth, and he has now catapulted to the forefront of this controversy. This preacher has a splendid opportunity to teach the nation about the oneness of man and especially about forgiveness and love. I am not suggesting that if Rev. Sharpton initiated a movement of forgiveness towards Mr. Imus that he would be accepting of Don's hateful comments. Quite the contrary; forgiveness does not mean that he agrees with what was said, only that he will no longer allow those words to carry any power and have a negative influence on his life or that of others. I am advocating that Rev. Sharpton take away the strength of the insult and empower good will. What an opportunity Rev. Sharpton has to lead people in virtue, rather than to continue to judge, be unforgiving and perpetuate hatred.
Let Don Imus have his job back; but, lets hope in the light of forgiveness, he is able to turn his broadcast into something worthwhile and uplifting. Both men have an incredible chance to make a positive difference to the attitudes of their countrymen. It is up to each how they react.
