Why coaches love suicide sprint drills

In many sporting contests, the difference between victory and defeat is endurance. If you've followed sports for even a short period of time, you've seen teams or individual athletes that were on their way toward victory, only to run out of gas as the game wears on. Coaches know that to have success they must push their teams to improve their conditioning. Suicide sprints are a great tool for achieving that.

Suicide sprints are a drill where athletes must run as fast as they can for a distance determined by the coach. They are then given a very brief rest, and then repeat the run. The advantages of this drill are:

1.) Increased endurance.
2.) Improved recovery rate (the amount of time it takes for the athlete to catch their breath and for their heart rate to return to normal).
3.) Increased speed over short to medium distances.

All three of these areas are important for any high-energy sporting event. An improvement in any of these areas could mean the difference between victory and defeat.
