You want to make soup for dinner, but you don't want it too end up too salty, right? Here are some tips to help you out, both to help prevent an overly-salty soup, and ways to fix a soup that has become too salty.
Tips for Preventing Salty Soup:
1) Use fresh vegetables whenever possible, as canned veggies usually have a lot of sodium for preservatives. If fresh veggies aren't available, use frozen bagged veggies.
2) Use homemade stock, or at least low sodium. You can also use water and add extra seasoning and spices to make up for the flavor of broth.
3) Add and extra salt SLOWLY. Make sure you stir it in well, let it simmer a bit, then taste it.
Tips for Removing Excess Salt
1) Peel a potato, then cut it in half or quarters. Drop them into the soup, wait 5 minutes, then take the potato out. The starchy potato will have absorbed the salt, leaving your soup good as new.
2) If you don't have a potato on hand, another good way to make something taste less salty is to add sugar. The sweetness of salt counteracts the overly salty flavor. Start with about a teaspoon full, then add a pinch or two at a time until the salty flavor is gone.
Keep these tips in mind as you make soup next, and you'll have a great soup with no overly salty flavor!
