I feel the way to encourage your child(ren) to enjoy reading is to really let them know how interested you are.
For instance, my daughter is nine years old and in the third grade. She has had trouble with her reading due to the fact that her social life in school is more important than what her teacher is trying to teach her. She is an excellent reader, however, she tends to get shy when it comes to reading; even around her mother and myself. The suggestion was made to make her read each day (seven days a week) for a minimum time of fifteen minutes, with the goal of helping her feel more comfortable reading out loud, as well as to improve her reading skills.
Now, in the beginning it was difficult. To my daughter it was as if she were being punished. It was a mission in itself to get her to complete a fifteen minute session. However, as time progressed, she began to enjoy sitting next to either myself or her mother and reading out loud to us. Her words flowed more freely, and she was learning (and still is) words beyond her vocabulary for a third grader.
Now, we no longer have to remind her of reading time because she beats us to the punch. She even wants to read to us two and three times a day; even during the school week. She reads privately to herself while in her room regulary, and is really starting to like the outcome of stories that she chooses to read.
As a father, I am very proud of her on her progress, and know she will continue to keep up the good work simply because her parents take time out to listen to her stories. Its a special time for her, and I wouldn't deprive her of that ever.
