Making phone calls online has gained popularity during the last several years and is certainly used by many for long distance calling. Making a phone call abroad with your landline phone or your cell phone is expensive, but with the aid of the Internet, it is now even possible to make phone calls to other continents for free. Calling for free is not exactly right because you need always a provider which charges you for having access to Internet, but there won't be any additional call charges.

The service for making phone calls online is called "VoIP" and means Voice over Internet Protocol. You need a broadband Internet connection, a VoIP enabled broadband modem or router, and some software. If you have still one of these modems or routers which are not compatible for VoIP services, you can always connect a VoIP adapter (ATA) to your modem or router. It is also helpful if you want to connect your landline phone on your computer. Using a VoIP service means in fact that your analogue signals will be turned in digital signals and you call through your broadband connection.

Many years ago it was only possible to make phone calls online between two persons who were online and they needed to listen through headsets and talk via microphones installed on their computers. There are now more possibilities to make phone calls online and it is even possible to call to landline phones and cell phones. For this last possibility you need specific software, for example Skype, and you can call everyone you want. Calling to other people who have installed Skype on their computer is cheaper and in most circumstances you can call for free. For VoIP calls to a landline phone or cell phone you will pay the normal rates of the country you are calling.

Messenger services are easier to install but you may not have all features Skype and some other VoIP providers offer. Most everyone has already some messenger services installed on their computer, for example Windows Live, Yahoo Messenger, or Google Talk, and they communicate already with each other through chatting services. If you already have a microphone installed, and have good sounding speakers you can easily talk with each other. If you have a webcam you can see each other. It is necessary to use the same software; so if you want to use these services with some friends in your hometown and even abroad you need to ensure you use the same messenger software.
