Testimonies: Extracting a special needs child from pubic school

We had to take my special needs son out of the public school because of repeatable temper-tantrums,hitting and being so violent. He is mentally and emotionally impaired and they didn't know how to deal with him. We knew he was in the wrong school and the school for a while was our enemy not our friend.

My son kept getting suspended for hitting and his hitting was a part of his disability. They wouldn't let him go on field trips, go swimming with the rest of the class and participate in many school events because they didn't want him acting up and disturbing the rest of the class.

They treated him like an out cast. He is now in a school that doesn't suspend him, they have a time out room for him and he gets a consequence for his actions. He would get to come home if he acted up or hit another student. He learned if he wanted to come home he just had to hit someone or act up. What does suspending a child really teach students? It teaches them if they act up they get to come home, where they want to be in the first place.

The public school system discriminates against most special needs kids because of the fact they do not conform to what the school's guide lines are. They just don't fit in.

I think the best thing was to get him out of the public school to where he is now. They caused so much trouble for my family and we are so much more happier. If he didn't get to go to this new school to help his behavior I was going to home school him.
