Viruses, Spyware, Trojans, Rootkits all of these terms are now pretty much laymen terms. As each day passes by, more and more computer users are realising the perils of these malicious programs and learning how to safeguard themselves from it. However with all the precautions, there is always the chance that spyware might sneak in.

Compared to viruses, spyware performs different functions. While the term spyware suggests software that secretly monitors the user's behavior, the functions of spyware extend well beyond simple monitoring. Spyware can end up monitoring user's surfing habits, personal information like e-mail IDs, passwords and PINs. Some spyware can even change some settings like the homepage on your browser, directing normal domains to virus filled or advert filled domains and even in extreme cases lead to the loss of Internet connection.

First let's talk about taking precautions so that one doesn't get spyware, as the old saying goes "Prevention is better than Cure":

If you use Firefox use the addon Ad-Block Plus and Flash Block, with these 2 as a combination you end up blocking all adverts and flash media. (Although flash media can be played if you click on the button) If you don't use Firefox use a free ad remove like Ad Muncher. Most spyware is spread by accidentally clicking on advertisements and loaded popups which install the malicious software on your computer.

DO NOT visit websites that contain any of these materials:

• Serial Keys, Cracks or Warez
• Torrents
• Adult Oriented Material

Also be wary of other websites which you are not sure of. To be safe try using the McAfee Site Advisor addon for IE and Firefox, it alerts you on which sites are safe and not.

BEWARE of rogue antispyware products, some include:

• AntiVirus Gold

• Errorsafe (AKA system doctor)
• MacSweeper
• PAL Spyware Remover
• Pest Trap

• SpyShredder
• Spy Sheriff
• Spy Wiper
• UltimateCleaner
• WinAntiVirus Pro 2006
• WinFixer

• WorldAntiSpy

Always be wary when inserting other people's external storage devices on your computer, they might be infected. Make sure to scan them with antivirus and antispyware software these rogue antispyware products just infect your computers more, stick
