Golf tips: Tips on hitting the dead wedge

The "dead" wedge. It really speaks for itself. Your scoring clubs (PW/GW/SW/LW) should all be hit with "dead" hands. In other words, a neutral grip with minimal hand action is the desired feel. The best way to hit a wedge shot of any kind is to swing with less "hit" and more "smooth". It really is a feel thing.

The best way to get the "feel" is by swinging the same for each of the wedge shots. Start with the same set up; ball middle to back middle of your stance, weight slightly forward on lead leg. Then take the club half way back (horizontal with ground)and swing through smoothly to a full high finish. Do this at least 10 times with each of your wedges preferably to a practice green. Take notice of where each ball lands and how it rolls out with each of your wedges. Also take note of the trajectory of each ball as it leaves the club.

Remember: Neutral grip, half back swing to a smooth high finish, watch the trajectory, where the ball lands, and how it rolls out.

With this drill you should be able to take the average landing distance and roll out of the balls hit with each wedge for an acurate prediction of each club for the future.

Using this "dead hand", smooth shot will enable you to knock it "dead" to the flag. Then do the same drill with a full back swing with the same dead hand high finish to get the acurate full shot for each wedge.
