Deciding if a degree in education is right for you

There are many good reasons to seriously consider getting a degree in education, but I think the most important question for some in that position to ask themselves is, "How much do I want to positively affect the world?"

If you truly want to have a positive and profound affect on the future of the world, then teach and teach well. If you just want a good salary and easy hours, go into sales or something, don't show up and put in your time with my children. That sounds harsh, but it is the most critical thought of the decision to teach or not to teach.

If you aren't sure that you will make a good teacher but want to teach well, maybe, then get the education degree, do your best to teach little formative minds, pushing them to high achievements; then after a few years, if you decide you are just putting in your time, go do something else. You have a good degree and background to do other things, and have made a positive contribution for a while, we would hope.

On the other side, if you are tired of putting in your time doing other things than teaching, and want to make a difference, the school room is where we shape the future, for better or for worse. Give it a shot. What do you have to lose, but yourself, and our children's futures?
