Short stories: Spring

Spring to me is the unveiling of all things new; of fresh colors bursting forth through the damp earth of Winter, their delicate blooms unfolding to the warming breeze of the changing season, the scent of the promise of Summer in the bluebells.

Spring is blue skies and a warming sun with a chilling breeze that brings the smell of early barbecues and the sound of lawnmowers and hedge trimmers. It is lighter evenings and brighter mornings and April showers.

Spring means the first picnic of the year; cucumber and tomato rolls, cocktail Cornish pasties, pink lady apples and strawberries and rose wine. All laid out on a blanket in lush grass while feeling the warm sun touching all, but still chilled by the remnants of a lingering Winter breeze.

Spring is sowing and planting the first seeds in the vegetable patch. From carrots, courgettes, lettuce and kale to tomatoes, peas and beetroot, all patiently sown and watered.

Spring is the time of the lambs, peering through the daffodils. Its the time of mackerel, all you can catch in the blue yet still cold seas. Its the time for the shedding of shoes on the beach and the first feel of sand between toes and the first chilling blast of ocean on white flesh.

Spring is here and with it, the promise of Summer.
