hands on activities and having discussions and going on field trips and having huge, elaborate projects (my 9th grade biology class will be working on a cross pollination investigation right after spring break, I CAN'T WAIT)
but....I'm "stuck"...with the "mandate" that says, "teach to the test" because they don't read very well, give homework and quizzes and chapter exams, because we need to "measure their growth".... document all of their "successes"...because we must maintain the "CYOB" rule...
Teachers aren't allowed to impart knowledge anymore ladies and gentlemen. Just so you know... the kids are frustrated about this...how many times can you measure whether someone knows their multiplication tables before you say..."ok, you got it"...?
Ask your children, ANY child, what they "learn" and they will probably say nothing.
Ask your children, ANY child, what they were "taught" and they will probably give you the lesson spouted at them that day.
What do we want for our children? Well rounded, empowered, life long learning, inquistive children.
What do we have for our children? Frustrated, dependent, stuck in the mid 20th century, robotic children.
I am a parent, as well as a teacher....and my first responsibility is the EDUCATION of my children. I CAN facilitate learning for them. You can facilitate learning for your children. Start by asking them what they're studying in school... and what they have actually learned. Finish by being that parent that the teacher hates to see coming... call to check on them, show up unannounced, make appointments to talk to the prinicpal...be a pain in the ass...
*sigh*
I love my job...peace humans....
